West Springs Hospital Temporarily Closes Its Youth Wing
The Western Slope’s psychiatric hospital is temporarily shuttering its youth wing due to low volume, with less than two children in care per day. Each year, the pediatric wing at West Springs Hospital sees a decrease in adolescent admissions, especially the second half of the summer break when school is out of session. If volume increases early, West Springs will reopen the unit.
Youth who come through the hospital’s Psychiatric Emergency Department will be evaluated in the psychiatric emergency department as normal and treated onsite or transferred to other appropriate behavioral health facilities, ensuring the well-being of patients and smooth transitions of care, while still providing critical care and a critical access point in the community.
West Springs anticipates the unit reopening in early August coinciding with the new school year starting and the end of the summer recess.
