Clinical Training Coordinator, West Springs Hospital
Deb has been a nurse all her life. She knew at age five she would be a nurse! Most of her family are either doctors or nurses so it’s “in her blood”. She earned her Associates in Nursing Science from Arapahoe Community College in Littleton, CO in 1987 and worked as a medical nurse for the first six years of her career, focusing on medical nursing units such as Oncology, ICU, CCU, Burn Unit and Dialysis. All these jobs paved the way into being able to care very confidently for medically ill patients. However, she wanted most of all to enter into the world of psychiatry. She received her first chance while working at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, CO, where she worked for about 13 years on the psychiatric unit. While there, she and another nurse decided to build a pathway of evaluating psychiatric patients in the ER and admitting them to the psychiatric unit. They presented this to their Medical Director and their system is still in effect today. Seeking another change, Deb taught Nursing at Mesa State College for about 4 ½ years, which satisfied her urge to “grow new nurses” and pass along her skills. While at Mesa State, she achieved another of her goals, attaining her BSN degree.
Missing psychiatry, Deb began picking up shifts at what was then called Colorado West Psychiatric Hospital. Now West Springs Hospital, she is very proud to be here. She currently “has the privilege” to be a part of the Hospital Leadership Team and although she misses working with patients, she gets to continue to “grow and encourage nurses”.
She shows her passion by saying, “West Springs Hospital and Mind Springs Health is a very progressive company with its heart and soul in the right place. We have highly educated and energetic leaders with great vision. It is very exciting for me to know that I am a part of something so BIG that will impact so many who are in need.”
In her free time she enjoys kayaking, skiing, snowshoeing, gardening (anything outside), and traveling the world.
