Addiction, clinically known as “Substance Use Disorder” is defined as the compulsive and continued use of a substance or participation in a behavior, exhibiting little or any control over the behavior despite negative consequences. Key characteristics that move abuse in into the category of addiction are the presence of tolerance and withdrawal. Tolerance occurs when increasing amounts of the substance or behavior are required to achieve the same “high.” Withdrawal symptoms occur when the substance or behavior is stopped. Addiction is usually thought of as involving alcohol, drugs, or smoking; however, people can also be addicted to gambling, eating, sex, even exercise.
The most common treatments include outpatient therapy, medication, and 12-step groups. Recovery is often a long-term process and may require multiple levels and periods of treatment. Yet, it is possible for people to manage their lives in a healthy, productive way.
A variety of outpatient treatments are available for abuse and dependence, depending upon the severity of the disorder.
